RPAC in Action: Council Says No to Term Limit Extension

The Fort Collins City Council put an end to a potential term limits extension before it could event get started during their work session on June 12. Mayor Karen Weitkunat put it best when she said, “It was Council’s idea to (put term limits on the ballot) begin with.” Adding that the Council is no longer seeking to place this issue on a Special November ballot or next Aprils Municipal ballot.

Council member Ben Manvel originally initiated the idea this spring, saying he was “feeling his own mortality” because his second and final four-year term ends in April 2013. In a very rare move the City Council chose to not even discuss the item. Equating to an affirmation for FCBR's use of RPAC funds to help inform the public & Council.

Utilizing a NAR My Realtor® Party grant, the Fort Collins Board of Realtors® commissioned a poll concerning term limits in March. Of 400 respondents, 67 percent said they opposed extending term limits for the Council. While none of the Council members were willing to admit the survey had any bearing on their decision, it is difficult to believe it wasn’t a factor. Pollster Joe Goode described the results as “overwhelming opposition.”

Regardless of the reason for Council’s decision not to put the issue on the November ballot, it was the right decision. In this economy, it would have appeared to be self-serving for the Council to spend  according to city staff estimates of between $100,000-$200,000 to put the term limits extension on a special ballot.

This item is a great example of how FCBR plans to leverage its local, state, & national REALTOR & Consumer Advocacy dollars into the future to help protect the community from needless spending by focusing on providing unbiased information meant to inform public dialog on community issues of importance to real estate and good governance.
