Government Affairs Committee Instrumental to Your Success
So now you know what the REALTOR® & Consumer Advocacy Department is, how about if I delve into one segment of it for you: the Government Affairs Committee.
There are 7 voting members of the Government Affairs Committee, myself, who was appointed by the Board President, 6 REALTOR® members & 1 Affiliate member, each of whom are appointed for 2 year terms from the applications they submit. We also have an alternate Affiliate Member, in case we have a vacancy at any specific meeting.
We at the Government Affairs Committee have roles in listening to, compiling, and interpreting information from a multitude of different groups. Our focus is on local issues, but we also try to keep abreast on topics at the state and national levels, too. Our duty is to take information and make it easily considered by the Board of Directors of your Fort Collins Board of REALTORS®, so that they can make informed decisions on your behalf, to benefit yourselves, your fellow REALTORS®, and your clients.
Let me give you some ideas of what we do and have done in the past:
• We were instrumental in helping the Board of Directors (BOD) push for changes to the Appeals Process that are beneficial for developers, which were approved at the City Council level.
• We interview local Political Candidates and make recommendations to the BOD for support of the candidates for office who most embody the REALTOR® Party.
• We meet at least twice annually with our local Representatives at the Local, County, and State level to make sure that communication lines are open, and so that both sides know where we each stand on different issues that may affect our REALTORS® and their clients.
• We have passed along recommendations for BOD support for less stringent requirements on URA Funding. This will help revitalize areas of Fort Collins that need it most.
This is just a small segment of what we do when we meet each month.
